description

Felin Fawr opened in 1803 as a manufacturing and processing facility producing sawn and polished slate products from slate quarried at the adjacent Penrhyn quarry. Felin Fawr is of national significance because of its industrial archaeology and as a component in the history of slate quarrying in the Ogwen Valley. Bearing this in mind Felin Fawr Cyf is re-developing the site, weaving the surviving structures into a scheme which will ensure their conservation whilst providing a range of accommodation which will benefit the local community by promoting local employment opportunities, enhancing the environment and interpreting the area's industrial past. The first stage of the re-development took place in 1995 with the refurbishment of one building to create three workshops. The second phase development has now been completed - to convert two of the previous Slab Mills into workshops / starter units. The total area of the two Slab Mills is approximately 810m2 and they have been adapted to house 7 workshops. Within each workshop there is an office, storage and kitchen space and toilet with access for the disabled. The workshops vary in size from 63m2 to 166m2 and retain many of the original features and will provide a traditional workshop ambience with exposed trusses and beams being a major feature. Security is foremost in our minds when designing units for industrial use and Felin Fawr is a fine example of how a traditional building can be adapted to provide high security without detracting from the character of the building. This is achieved through the provision of solid timber doors or similar shutters hung on the outer face of every external opening to provide night-time security. During the day they can be folded back on to the external face of the wall to expose a further folding screen on the inner face of the building. These inner screens are glazed to allow light into the units and form the pedestrian access. They have also been designed to fold away to provide a vehicular access as necessary. Window openings in the building are of a similar design thus offering double protection against intruders.
